NIXIE BREEZEWAY MURAL

ABout the project

Located at Nixie MAA in the Research Triangle Park(RTP) in Durham, NC. The Nixie Breezeway was completed in June 2025. Spanning over 50 feet across two walls and roughly 13 feet tall. This was an interesting design challenge due to the location on the mural being in a breezeway where a passerby is only ever a few feet away, the composite images above give away more of the design than an observer in the breezeway would be able to see at once. I treated the walls less as one image and more like a gallery wall, where the viewer is met with a menagerie of local flora and fauna each painted with distinct personalities and styles. The swallowtail butterflies accompany the viewer along the path, guiding their eyes to different moments along the way. These focal points are framed in large geometric shapes that spell out “Nixie Bright,” pulling from Nixie MAAs branding and culture. The negative space is backdropped with a map of the waterways of RTP that connects and literally gives life to the diverse collection depicted within the shapes. The shadows follow the distinct directional light created by the open ends of the breezeway, highlighting the different layers and adding depth to the space (relatively narrow compared to most mural experiences).
